After we collected ourselves, I walked Grace the rest of the way home. I managed to shift back into my human form as we got closer. Somewhere between the boulders and the clearing around the campus property, sheâd gone quiet, and turned inward. I hated it.
She stopped outside the main doors of the building, as though we were on some awkward first date and she was about to give me a kiss on the cheek and send me on my way.
âIâd better get inside. The girls â¦â She looked guiltily away from me.
âThe girls are fine. I checked on them earlier and Vago is down the hall from their apartment. Letâs get a nightcap, hmm?â I opened the door, gesturing for her to go inside.
âOh. Alright.â The blush on her cheeks revived the embers of my lust. It was going to be very difficult to get anything done if my hormones decided I was reverting back to my younger years. Much, much younger years.
Grace flitted around the kitchen, piling up my favorite little honey cakes on a plate. âDid you want wine?â she asked.
âThis is fine,â I said, making quick work of a handful of the sweet confections. She ate one as well, avoiding my eyes. âGrace.â
âHmm?â
âAre you alright?â
She blushed again, but nodded. âYes, Iâm fine. Itâs just been ⦠a while. Iâm not sure how this part goes.â
âThis part?â
Grace gestured her arms widely, then waved her hand between our bodies. âAfter. This. What comes next.â
I tilted my head to the side, catching some of her loose curls in my fingers as I crowded into her body. She tensed but held her ground, looking up at me. âWe are the same as we were before, Grace. Just ⦠more.â
âMore.â
âYes.â I dipped down, pressing my lips to her forehead.
âOkay,â she whispered.
We picked at the cakes, spoke about plans for the day, the week ⦠anything but discuss the topic looming over us. âWe need to talk about what happened tonight,â I prompted. âAmong other things.â
âI know.â
She wasnât forthcoming, so I didnât press. âYou need to get some rest. So do I. Itâs late, and you know how I need my beauty sleep.â
She snorted and gave me the smile Iâd been hoping for. âI do. Breakfast will be coming very early, I have a feeling.â
âIâm sorry for robbing you of your rest time,â I apologized. âBut not for anything else.â
âMe neither,â she said quietly.
Relief washed over me. Rejection was not something I was familiar with, mostly because I didnât offer myself up for it often. It would have been painful for her to regret our coupling. Guilt would have eaten me from the inside out, and I wouldnât have forgiven myself for not only hurting her but ruining our friendship.
She put away our leftovers and cleaned up, leaving us staring at one another again in the quiet kitchen. âFor what itâs worth, I donât know how this part goes either,â I finally said, wrapping my arms around her. Grace sagged into my embrace in a way that gave me great relief.
