After we collected ourselves, I walked Grace the rest of the way home. I managed to shift back into my human form as we got closer. Somewhere between the boulders and the clearing around the campus property, she’d gone quiet, and turned inward. I hated it.

She stopped outside the main doors of the building, as though we were on some awkward first date and she was about to give me a kiss on the cheek and send me on my way.

“I’d better get inside. The girls …” She looked guiltily away from me.

“The girls are fine. I checked on them earlier and Vago is down the hall from their apartment. Let’s get a nightcap, hmm?” I opened the door, gesturing for her to go inside.

“Oh. Alright.” The blush on her cheeks revived the embers of my lust. It was going to be very difficult to get anything done if my hormones decided I was reverting back to my younger years. Much, much younger years.

Grace flitted around the kitchen, piling up my favorite little honey cakes on a plate. “Did you want wine?” she asked.

“This is fine,” I said, making quick work of a handful of the sweet confections. She ate one as well, avoiding my eyes. “Grace.”

“Hmm?”

“Are you alright?”

She blushed again, but nodded. “Yes, I’m fine. It’s just been … a while. I’m not sure how this part goes.”

“This part?”

Grace gestured her arms widely, then waved her hand between our bodies. “After. This. What comes next.”

I tilted my head to the side, catching some of her loose curls in my fingers as I crowded into her body. She tensed but held her ground, looking up at me. “We are the same as we were before, Grace. Just … more.”

“More.”

“Yes.” I dipped down, pressing my lips to her forehead.

“Okay,” she whispered.

We picked at the cakes, spoke about plans for the day, the week … anything but discuss the topic looming over us. “We need to talk about what happened tonight,” I prompted. “Among other things.”

“I know.”

She wasn’t forthcoming, so I didn’t press. “You need to get some rest. So do I. It’s late, and you know how I need my beauty sleep.”

She snorted and gave me the smile I’d been hoping for. “I do. Breakfast will be coming very early, I have a feeling.”

“I’m sorry for robbing you of your rest time,” I apologized. “But not for anything else.”

“Me neither,” she said quietly.

Relief washed over me. Rejection was not something I was familiar with, mostly because I didn’t offer myself up for it often. It would have been painful for her to regret our coupling. Guilt would have eaten me from the inside out, and I wouldn’t have forgiven myself for not only hurting her but ruining our friendship.

She put away our leftovers and cleaned up, leaving us staring at one another again in the quiet kitchen. “For what it’s worth, I don’t know how this part goes either,” I finally said, wrapping my arms around her. Grace sagged into my embrace in a way that gave me great relief.
